The Pygmalion Effect

So I read an interesting fact in one of my text books today and it got me thinking.

So the Pygmalion effect, is an effect recognized by a German poet, Goethe, almost 200 years ago, when he said: ‘if you want someone to perform better, tell him how good he is. If you want someone to perform worse, tell him how bad he is.’

The same effect was demonstrated by Rosenthal and Jacobson in 1968, when they created an impression among a group of teachers that certain children had an above-average IQ. After some time, these children performed better than other children with the exact same IQ but had not been brought to the teachers’ attention. Such expectations from teachers not only negatively influenced the academic performance, but badly effected the children’s motivation.

When negative expectations are created, teachers/managers/bosses are less encouraging, more inpatient, more prone to negative remarks or comments. They will most likely smile less towards the individual and make less eye-contact.

So are our teachers influencing our children’s outcome in education? Are our managers/bosses influencing our employees work methods/outcomes?

Same thing applies to ourselves! Are we treating ourselves with negative expectations, or are we trying to think positively.

I had a mental ‘melt down’ earlier this year, and then was involved in a serious car accident. Been told by doctors that you have a mental illness, does that make you think more negative about yourself – does this lead to more negative things approaching your life?

Makes you wonder – something good to think about.

This is me, trying to smash mental illness stigma and getting people to think.
